Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Charlie W — 28 Feb 2011
A lot more realised than "Bronson", I found "Valhalla Rising" to be a compelling and interesting watch. It's challengingly deliberate, and deliberately challenging (I spent a while coming up with that phrase, sounds like an authentic pretentious movie critic phrase, right?).
The film has a muted color palette, and a minimalist score, which create a very bleak atmosphere. This combined with the lack of dialogue create a very unwelcoming movie. However the cinematography is incredibly smart, with wide landscapes and extreme close ups on faces.
It's at times excessively violent, and at times painstakingly slow. Yet for the film snobs in the audience it is nothing short of fascinating and beautiful. I'm just left wondering what the point really was.
