Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by J.j. W — 10 Jul 2011
A film that sacrifices story and development for atmosphere and ideals. I can applaud the film for its ambitious attempts to tell a story as minimalistic as possible. The composition of the settings and landscapes are undoubtedly imaginative, fresh, and eerie.
However, I cannot ignore the fact that basic storytelling elements, techniques, and structures were ignored in favor of bringing a visual atmospheric experience. No doubt the directing is superb in the film, however the film's screenplay would have been an absolute bore to read.
A great film's writing should be as interesting as it's visuals. This is just not the case here.
