Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Ricardo O — 11 Nov 2011
Valhalla Rising is a film that centers on Norse mythology. It's a sort of âAguirre, the Wrath of Godâ type of story shot and directed in the style of Andrei Tarkovsky. It's not for everybody's taste but the ratings on Flixster and IMDB do not represent how good of a film it actually is.
Yes, it is slow-paced, but with a 90 minute running time you can't complain too much. Yes, there is very little dialogue but what the intensity in the facial expressions is enough to give off all the information one really needs to know about the characters.
The violence is brutal and comes very quickly at times. The cinematography is spellbinding with all of the shots of mountainsides and fog. If you're looking for an action oriented Viking tale, it'll be best to look elsewhere because you won't get it here.
Instead you get a film centering on nature and religion. It's not a great film but is a film I believe to be worth checking out. 8/10.
