Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Zak S — 30 Jun 2012
Nicolas Winding Refn is a powerful director and 'Valhalla Rising' is further proof of that, but the film contains elements that may alienate its audience. Some of the film is very confusing and contains many questions that are left unanswered. 'Valhalla Rising' might prove to be an instance of style over substance. Refn's signature style is still here to marvel at in aesthetic terms, but not much else. At the film's core, Mads Mikkelson does a great job in the wordless role and really carries the weight of the film. Refn's adoration for blood and violence is also present, and is actually one of the few redeemable, entertaining values the filmhas to offer. If you can't stand any Art.
House film with aesthetics on its mind, then stay away. Other than that, its worth a look at a talented director and beautiful cinematography, with a cool central role from.
The protagonist.
