Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Frances H — 04 Feb 2014
A visually beautiful film, if not much in the way of dialogue or plot that goes anywhere. However, it is a good glimpse of life in the uncertain world of the first millennium A.D. where life was harsh and violent with death omnipresent.
And you didn't leave sight of a shoreline if you didn't want to be irrevocably lost. It was a time when people set off for the Holy Land without knowing where it was. Any journey was perilous when most people never travelled more than five miles from their birthplace during their lives.
A harsh world and a harsh film odyssey. It's not a likable film, but a truthful glimpse of life at that time.
