Review of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970) by Heather M — 09 May 2008
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders.
Surrealistic, dreamy and visually poetic film with a labyrinthine and bewildering plot. Valerie has had her first menstruation, which somehow seems to mysteriously transform her little Czech village into a bizarre cinematic collage of witches, vampires, incest, sexual awakening, an evil priest and perplexing familial revelations The film features gorgeous Czech landscapes captured by breathtaking cinematography and accompanied by a tranquilizing score which sounds something like (very subtly) psychedelic Czech folk music, with a lot of flutes. A pure feel good visual poem!
