Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Stefano L — 08 Oct 2017
Great disappointment from Valerian. It's not that I hoped for a masterpiece of sci-fi, but at least I had some faith that I was going to see a nice movie. But the direction of Luc Besson is really really really annoying (like "In the fifth sense"). I dare to say that reaches the level of the first hour of Star Wars - episode one, except that here we don't have Jar Jar Binks (but the three ducks were greatly annoying as well). I found the movie in itself very childish (from the face expressions of the actors to the situation they finished in) and lacking of drama (the dicotomy between frivoulous/serious was unbalanced versus the first one and compromised also the other part) and care for nearly all the characters (also when one of them dies it happens so fast that is nearly impossible to even feel for it).
In the final part the introduction of the topic of war damages and the repaying for them that, if put more central in the movie, could have saved it from the total failure.
The only reason I have given 2 stars instead of 1 1/2 is because of the first five amazing minutes, dedicated to the city of Alpha.
