Is it tonally inconsistent? Yes, it is. Is it all over the place in terms of narrative? Very much so. Is Dane DeHaan miscast as Valerian? Kind of (keep in mind that I'm a big fan of his work.) Is some of the dialogue cliched? Hell yes.
But did I have an absolute blast watching this $200 million sci-fi fantasy extravaganza? Abso-fucking-lutely!! This is one of the most visually exciting and imaginative films I've ever seen. The visual effects in this are so eye-poppingly gorgeous and so original that I was never tired of looking at the screen even when the story took a significant detour (having said that, the shape-shifting Rihanna bit was enormously entertaining.
) I can't say the same about the story or characters, but it didn't matter to me that much. It's a guaranteed cult classic and will absolutely stand the test of time. I loved it!
