Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by James T — 21 Mar 2018
Just watched this film, as it is streaming on Amazon Prime. Outside of DeHaan and Rhianna, the casting is spot on, and usually that is not something I would say. Hollywood spends too much time with the look over substance, but the cast is pretty tight. DeHaan is just not up to the lead, definitely not leading man material, whether in film or stage. I was very surprised by Delevinge. I was not expecting such a performance from a model. She definitely fleshes the character out, and can teach DeHaan a thing or two.
I am surprised that many people call the film a mess. I followed the story easily, thought it quite good, thoughtful and meaningful, but then again, I am not a critic and spent my life on stage...
Over all, I would recommend the film to anyone. It is beautiful on the eyes, fun, fast paced, and a very good story. Makes me want to read the other books!
