The Fifth Element meets Twilight... and Twilight wins. Besson's trademark weirdness and imagination were fun & welcome, but the leads look like they are 12 years old, which completely strained credibility.

They are cute youngsters, don't get me wrong, but they show little acting talent and even less chemistry between them. Not to mention that the main plot point - their relationship - seems very, VERY much like it was written by a 12-year-old girl, for 12-year-old girls.

Besson seems to have forgotten that what propelled Fifth Element to cult status was not just quirky story and special effects, but the raw star power and intense screen magic of Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich.

Having believable leads with actual talent and charisma would have made all the difference - and might have even made up for the overall-directionless plot.
