Cara Delevingne can't act. Cara Delevingne is a product of a rotten British class system where people on top get opportunities and (more) money and jobs because they were born in the right family. She may have a lot of Instagram followers. Her Wiki is longer than that of Winston Churchill (which is ridiculous) but she just can't act.
I kept watching seeing how she'll handle romance, surprise, shock, anger and it's all so laughably bad. It's like seeing a bored teen who just doesn't give a fXck about anything because doors have been opened for her since she was a kid. She doesn't have charisma probably because she never needed charisma, or talent or skill or emotional vulnerability because she had connections and money.
So by all means, if you want your movie to tank hire Cara Delevingne.
I've never heard of Dane DeHaan before this movie. There's some more effort than undeserving Cara Delevigne but the guy's acting a playboy role. Sorry to be mean (though I don't even know or care about Dane so I'm just being blunt) but he's just an average dude to me. Nothing wrong with that but it doesn't work in the movie that's supposed to be this big. Supporting European characters/actors were neat-o.
Clive Owen is good but that's probably because he's a working actor and not a brat with money who gets to be in the movies just because his family is Sir or Madam. Main actors chemistry:
They have no chemistry. Cool aliens and costumes: Where things went right for the 5th Element they just look eccentric here. Rihanna's performance was cool but that was 2 minutes long at best. People talked about the 5th Element for years and years to come. Nobody will talk about Valerian.
I realised that Luc Besson stopped making good movies. Nikita and Leon were cool, so was the 5th Element but nothing after that. Sure, lots of special effects here. Lots of interesting alien species. But despite all of that the movie just doesn't work. The movie isn't great by itself like Avatar to rely on itself and have a bunch of new actors. On the other hand, actors didn't have any charisma to make the story worth watching JUST for them like in "Passengers".
If you want to see a movie that has a lot of ingredients of the 5th Element but despite all of that doesn't work go see it. Or you can go see it to see why it's important to have a cool male lead in your movie (Bruce Willis) and LeLoo who actually shows vulnerability and feelings.
