Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Random V — 19 Jan 2018
This is a movie for the future. I don't expect it to be truly appreciated until the next generation comes into its own. It is visually and auditorally incredible. But its true genius lies in the very thing most critics are decrying it for: the plot and feel.
First things first, the perspective is acurate for its time: the future. The reason most people hate the plot is because it seems contradictory and/or slapped together. How can Valarian decry the destruction of an entire race and then do a good job of killing a ton of another with no shame or emotion? The answer is simple.
He is a soldier. There is only the job and getting it done. This is repeated by almost every high ranking soldier in the movie. Lauraline is the balance for him. She reminds him of the value of emotion and intangables like trust.
Together they give a message not just of a 'cool' story about space detectives but of how peoples perspectives and value systems can change for the better. It looks at the future with hope while not discounting the fact that not everything will be perfect.
It shows the need for forgiveness and remorse while always remembering. It deals in deep philosophy of a world that doesn't exist (yet?) but that would be a good thing to hope for in the future. I am sure this great movie will be given the attention it deserves within the next generation of children.
