To start with, until I began seeing previews for this movie, I had never heard of the Valerian comic books, or new anything of these stories. I had seen and really liked a number of Luc Besson's films, so I was immediately intrigued and looking forward to seeing this movie.

I was dismayed by the critics scathing reviews, but I decided to go and see the film anyway. I entered the theater with no expectations, only hoping that it would not be a complete waste of time and money.

Well, surprise, surprise! This is a good film! Gorgeous to look at, and full of thrills, but it also has comedy, romance, and a message of tolerance and understanding. Despite what the critics have written, I had no trouble following the plot (yes, there is one).

You do have to pay attention as necessary details fly by. Perhaps the critics were too preoccupied with thinking up their devastating witticisms to pay any attention to what was going on on the screen.

I enjoyed the performances of the actors (even the ones hidden behind CGI). I liked the two leads very much. In fact, I think it's a terrific film, and advise that if you're curious to see it, don't wait for home video.

See it on the big screen, preferably in 3D. I don't know why the critics are intentionally trying to sandbag this movie. Do they have a vendetta against Luc Besson? Did he slight them in some way? Perhaps they just can't abide that this is not a typical, formulaic Hollywood sci-fi CGI fest.

It's not filled with muscle bound studs and buxom bimbos. There's action and violence yes, but not a bloodbath. It's set far into the future and there is darkness, but it's not a depressing dystopian existence.

I highly recommend this movie for anyone with a vivid imagination and a willingness to immerse themselves in the story. Also, if you liked Besson's, The 5th Element, you will probably like Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
