Review of V/H/S: Viral (2014) by David V — 08 Nov 2014
Least favorite of the trilogy. The anthology strategy was clever and it wrapped around with satisfying "what you should expect" from a third installment. The route being "viral" takes away from what was appealing in the first two films.
Mild scares and corny 80's creepshowesque plot gave me a love/hate feeling throughout. Overall it was a fast paced, "in your face" creation with camera angles that were ingeniously executed to create originality at every opportunity possible, but aside from it's predecessors uses the "shock" factor rather than terror and gritty disturbances that made the others terrifying as it's main target of reaction.
So constant, that Its clear to expect almost immediately every scene was going to include some sort of WTF moment. Which is good for some and bad for others depending on your attention span. There's definite credability for the directors taking advantage of every single frame as an opportunity for visual enthrallment, but for me ,it was overkill to the point where all else at some point lacked surprise and just turned into a "that was cool" mindset.
Every moment became a predictable crafty output minute by minute until the final act, which made the entire film feel like they rushed areas of creativity that were overworkked at something that could've been a lot more visually pleasing and less bothersome.
The foundation of the movie was glued with force feeding the audience as much eye engaging trickery as possible in 90 minutes. There is definitely going to be a biased audience on whether or not it worked in their favor.
As for me, the creativity was overfed and backfired.
