Review of V/H/S/2 (2013) by Jose D — 05 Nov 2013
There's something to be said for consistency. The anthology horror series continues when a couple breaks into a house to find copious amounts of VHS tapes, all containing horrors shot found footage snuff style.
I liked the original V/H/S, but honestly, you could have just watched the first and last segments and skipped all the rest, as those are the only two you walk away retaining. They got a batch of new directors here, and they came armed with a number of fresh and innovative ideas.
For example, they consistently address the question that most people ask while watching a found footage movie: "why don't they just put the camera down?' They find creative ways around it, like a robotic eye, or a camera hat, or a camera attached on the back of a dog.
For me, this movie peaks in the third segment, where a camera crew goes to visit a cult in an isolated compound. The segment utilizes an effective rule: the less explained, the better, and the end result is twenty minutes that seriously freaked me out.
The one criticism I would lend to this is that the very last segment is the weakest of the four; it's not even all that bad, but being that previous segment was so effective, it feels like it ends on a weak note by comparison.
This is a step up from the previous movie, and this low budget series is admirable for doing more with less.
