Review of V/H/S/2 (2013) by Kenny N — 06 Jul 2015
A fine sequel to a crafty original. Like the last film, one can't simply review the WHOLE thing. One must pick their favorite segments and analyze them. Let's start from the beginning. The first segment, "Phase 1 Clinical Trials," is probably the ultimate POV film in found footage.
We see the entire horrifying story unfold through one man's innovative camera eye. Adam Wingard, who directed the wraparound segment of the last film, directs and plays the man with the all-seeing eye-one that makes him see things he wishes he couldn't.
The next segment, "A Ride In The Park," from one of the directors of the gold standard of found footage movies, "The Blair Witch Project," is the POV of a zombie. I won't go any further into detail so I don't spoil anything.
After that is "Safe Haven," a truly terrifying segment that, with expansion, could serve as it's own movie. It's the inside look at the doings of a cult that make the Peoples Temple look like the Osmond family.
You won't believe how this one ends. And finally, we have "Slumber Party Alien Abduction." I'm not too fond of this one. It's title pretty much explains it all, and it doesn't really distinguish itself from the many other "Alien Abduction" movies.
So if you liked the first one, by all means give the sequel a try. I dare say the tapes are better (i.e. more horrifying) than the last batch!
