Review of V for Vendetta (2006) by Victoria C — 18 Mar 2013
"V for Vendetta" is a film that, after watching it, I realized had managed to completely blow me away and engross me into the world of the film. That's enough for me to give it top marks.
Of course, it is also helped by an array of fantastic performances - Natalie Portman, Stephen Rea, Stephen Fry and John Hurt. Plus of course Hugo Weaving who despite hiding behind the infamous Guy Fawkes mask, managed to convey a surprising repertoire of emotions.
The film has a strong message - that the people are in control of the government, not the other way around. Unfortunately, due to the Guy Fawkes mask's subsequent activity, this message has now been misconstrued by a lot of people as "give us free music you ungrateful record companies, or we will sit behind a computer and turn off your server". Not quite as elegant, but such things happen.
Doesn't take away from the fact that this is an absolute top-notch comic book adaptation, which has the mark of the screenwriters, the Wachowski Brothers, all over it.
