Review of Utama (2022) by Mauro_Lanari — 22 Feb 2023
(Mauro Lanari).
A first work winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance but dispersive, wavering and contradictory: it laps environmentalism, patriarchy, generational change, dwells more on the grandfather and his impeccable opposition to therapeutic obstinacy, yet the conclusive impression is that of ethnographic cinema. "Silence is not always good," says the grandmother to her grandson, but the dialogues are cut to the bone and replaced by a soundtrack with rhetorical tracks ("Cantos crepuscolares", "Solitaria").
