Review of Used Cars (1980) by John W — 13 Nov 2007
Probably the most underrated film in history. This is one of the funniest movies ever made and it wasn't even released on the east coast. Knowledgeable movie buffs often don't know this one. It was released as Columbia Pictures' answer to Airplane and ended up getting lost in the shuffle. Airplane became a huge hit, and Used Cars, which is actually a funnier movie, was thrown to the back burner. It stars Kurt Russell as Rudy Russo, a used car salesmen with dreams of becoming a political yes man. But instead he ends up falling in love and attempting to save Luke Fuchs' (Jack Warden) car lot from his evil brother used car salesman Roy L. Fuchs, also played by Warden. The movie is a true gem, funny gags and great physical humor. The movie also has one of the most dangerous, crazy real car chases ever. One of the few films that has the ability to very smart in an incredibly stupid way. Russell gives a priceless performance. Gerrit Graham, Jack Warden, and an incredibly stunt dog Toby. This movie also contains one of the funniest moment in movie history: Marshall Lucky's car advertisement. I've watched that seen close to a hundred times and it never gets old.
In the end, Used Cars is one of the funniest movies of the 80s, and anyone who can appreciate crude, slapstick humor will love it.
