Review of U.S. Marshals (1998) by Adam S — 18 Dec 2013
A spin-off/sequel to the megahit "The Fugitive", focused around Tommy Lee Jones' character, U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard, a role that had earned Jones an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, seemed like a sure thing, even by Hollywood's standards.Throw in the charisma of Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey Jr (neither had been disgraced by this point), and you get a mouth waterer.
Unfortunately, U.S. Marshals couldn't live up to it's potential, and is merely a formulaic action film with some chuckle inducing dialogue. The attempt to turn Gerard into an action franchise anchor would have been more successful if he wasn't always chasing innocent men who escaped custody due to an unfortunate vehicular accident.
Another issue is that Downey Jr isn't given the room to use his own trademark sarcastic wit, which would have been a riot alongside Jones' own trademark dry persona.
Instead, it's an opportunity lost, and just a mindless action flick that will get a few views on a lazy afternoon.
