Review of Us (2019) by Savagela — 01 Apr 2019
This movie is much deeper than the critics and audience are seeing. To judge it as a genre film is to miss the point. It is the poetry of the symbols that make this movie great. Think what it means that they look exactly like us.
Why? And why: All in red, prison uniforms, underground, barely speak, act weird and wrong, aggrieved and violent, say they're "Americans", cut the nation in half. Are they the tortured soul of black folks? Of America? Of outer vs inner self? of our current politics? All of these meanings shimmer and shift, like in a poem, and don't resolve.
It's about the soul of America in 2019 the way "Waiting for Godot" was about the soul of Europe in the 20th Century. Judging this film by the scares or thrills or mythology is to miss the good stuff.
