Review of Us (2019) by Compi24 — 26 Mar 2019
For his next trick, Jordan Peele attempts to maintain the same sort of narrative intrigue, tension, and thematic resonance that was present in "Get Out," but by diving into a different realm of content and utilizing an entirely disparate scale of storytelling.
The resulting horror treatise, "Us," is a bit of a mixed bag. From a simple, visceral, filmmaking standpoint, it works. The movie is composed really well -- visually speaking -- the tensions at hand are tantalizing enough to string an audience along for a couple of hours, and the performances are all top notch.
But there's something lost in the translation of what Jordan Peele was trying to say with this one. Looking to "Get Out," there was something so intimate and simple about the concepts in play.
And, although it tended to beat these concepts a bit to death in my opinion, I completely understood what was being said. "Us" paints with a more thematically broad brush; one that I'm certain has painted a picture that will leave many audience members uttering, ".
. .huh?" by its conclusion. Couple that with some general narrative clumsiness and a few gaping plot holes here and there, and you're left with a mostly enjoyable, yet frustratingly imperfect product.
