Review of Us (2019) by Judahjsn — 28 Mar 2019
I have no idea what the praise for this movie is about. Residual appreciation for Get Out? Us is visually stylish but extremely pretentious and flat and just boring. It seemed like they imagined a bunch of visually arresting screen grabs and then wrote the script from there trying to create a story of it. It also felt like a hundred other things I'd seen in other movies and shows and never quite its own thing.
This pales in comparison to any movie you could possibly compare it to, from Mandy to Hereditary to any of the great A24 films or any of the classic Kubrick, Polanski or Hitchcock movies it was probably using as inspiration. There is an annoying M Knight Shyamalan-ish twist at the end that kind of invalidates the whole film. The sad thing about this twist was that it felt like a desperate last-minute attempt at achieving impact.
