Review of Urban Legend (1998) by Zachary H — 22 Aug 2011
This movie is pretty good as a horror movie. The deaths are original (as far as deaths based on Urban Legends can be). Also, this movie has some really great performances. The death scene performances are actually quite competent and come of as very real.
The opening scene really belongs with some of the best horror movie opening screams (somewhere between Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street on the top and Final Destination 4 on the bottom). Some of the film does seem disconnected and confused about whether it is trying to be spiritually based (particularly the 'Bloody Mary' scene) but the movie still is entertaining.
There are plenty of downsides to this movie, but if one were to shut their brain off and merely watch the movie rather than analyze it, they would find it an enjoyable experience. Overall, it is a horror movie that is gaping with plotholes and fails at its ambition to be as good as Scream or even I Know What You Did Last Summer, but it is a pretty fun watch and can entertain you if you need a movie to watch.
