Review of Urban Cowboy (1980) by Steven C — 27 May 2010
When you wanted to order pay per view movies in your hotel room back in the day you had to get a plastic key from the front desk that you put in a box attached to the TV. That's how I originally saw Urban Cowboy.
.when I was 8. I guess it was sorta inappropriate for me @ that age considering it had Travolta waking up from a threesome w/ a hang over in the first reel. The only thing I remembered from this was Scott Glenn eating that mescaline worm though.
Urban Cowboy is actually a very funny (not always intentionally) white trash love tale. Country boy Travolta moves to Pasadena gets a shitty job @ the foundry, gets married to Debra Winger & moves into a trailer park.
The newlywed couple spend their time going to the prison rodeo & Gillies a giant red neck club w/ such things a punching bag machine, two step dancing & of course a mechanical bull. Travolta becomes obsessed w/ bull riding but doesn't take too kindly to his wife riding & has to smack her around a bit.
He throws her out & she runs into the arms of another bull rider which only pisses Travolta off more to take on a fuck toy of his own. Of course they end up in each others arms after the big bull riding contest.
More fun then it should be even though it's so fucking long. They even had to kill off Uncle Bob to add another 15-20 minutes. A dynamite country soundtrax that has The Charlie Daniels Band throw down The Devil Went Down To Georgia.
.Fan-fuckin-tastic.
