Review of Urban Cowboy (1980) by Rocknblues 8 — 11 Nov 2009
Laughable tale of late 70's/early 80's nightlife in Texas. The movie aims to be a cowboy version of Saturday Night Fever with it's early 80's country soundtrack. The cast largely features ignorant meathead characters doing stupid things, which means the film works better as an unintentional comedy than it does a real drama.
I just hope the writers and director made this film to mock this culture instead of expecting people to buy into it as a biting drama. It's not a low point for any of the cast, but it's not any of their strongest work to be sure. I think Travola was just trying to keep his late 70's vibe going through this slight variation of those older movies.
