Review of Upstream Color (2013) by David J — 15 Jun 2013
Shane Carruth truly knows how to create an experimental film. This film depicts two characters who are drawn together after undergoing surreal experiments involving worms and pigs, and through the two of them and the animals, they live on under the surveillance of a man simply known as "The Sampler.
" The film has a rather complex plot, but manages to engage the viewer and stir up a debate after the credits roll. This film reminds me a lot of Tree of Life with its wonderful cinematography, lack of excessive dialogue, and a deep inner meaning, that is not always easy to point out.
This movie has the potential to do very well, especially with its originality, but it seems that at times, the film simply drags on and takes a while to get to the parts that it wants to viewer to witness.
This was one of the most different films I have ever seen, and though I do not recommend it for everyone, I do recommend it for someone that wants a real good brain-teaser and enjoys experimental and abstract work.
