Review of Upstream Color (2013) by Liz B — 30 Jun 2013
I didn't dislike this movie, and in general I kind of enjoyed it. However, I'm not convinced that it achieved everything it set out to do - just felt like it was still missing something (and I don't mean potentially a scene that ended up on the cutting room floor). It would be easy to say that the filmmakers deliberately left some parts vague/wanted you to think for yourself etc. but I feel like there's a smidge of emperor's-new-clothes about the critical accolades, kind of like a Darren Aronofsky film (but much better, I will admit) or some of the other "deep" pictures of the last decade or so.
Very good acting on the part of Amy Seimetz, I will say.
