Review of Upstream Color (2013) by Scott B — 04 Nov 2013
The first act is astonishingly beautiful and for 30 minutes I was positive this film would make it into my top 5 of the year. And then... it loses momentum and drags near the end. This is especially a disappointment because I love artsy films and I really love the type that are abstract (read: David Lynch).
Maybe even more so because everything is there: beautiful cinematography, leaves things up to the viewer, the type of movie where the actors tell their characters' stories though their faces. But.
.. it's been done before and so much better. I did understand the movie and it was well made, but it left me feeling cold. Check Primer out, it has a similar concept, is by the same director and is much more likely to leave you feeling impressed.
