Review of Upstream Color (2013) by Jay A — 05 Jan 2014
Unlike any "standard" movie that has a coherent narrative, this one presented itself as a dream-like reality comprised of cryptic impressions and enigmatic parallel events. What was interesting was that while I felt like I was at the point of grasping it all together, there would come another scene which I would even have to figure if it was to add another dimension to the thoughts that I had already formed, or if it was another entirely different idea .
Even so, it was a "oddly hypnotic" -- visuals really were beautiful and the sound made the viewing experience more enveloping. While I try to tell myself that it was not meant to give a specific message (but merely a sensory experience), somehow I could not help myself going back to this and think about the undercurrents and overtones, hoping to discover something new.
So i'm giving it a five star, not by virtue of a compelling story, but because I gladly stuck with it for 1 1/2 hour.
