Review of Upstream Color (2013) by Sam H — 23 Mar 2014
I know movies like this aren't really supposed to make sense. The viewer doesn't need to deduce the reason for the chaos that ultimately ensues onscreen; and yet I can't help feeling "cheated" in a way, like someone is playing a practical joke on me.
I feel like something of a philistine because my obsessive need to know the truth and solve the mystery in movies like these distracts me from the "art" aspect of it, but the fact is it irritates me immensely.
Having said that, I think the look and especially the sound of this film is really incredible, and can carry this movie 60% of the way. But I still want to know what's up with those roundworms, pigs and that farmer/foley artist.
