Review of Upstream Color (2013) by Tanmart S — 08 Aug 2014
Upstream Color is a baffling, opaque mess. If you like confusing films that border on pretentious, then look no further than Upstream Color. There's no real sense of pacing either, leaving the film feeling far longer than its 96 minute duration. In short, it's a nauseatingly pretentious bore, that is compelling only in fleeting moments. More a series of obtuse moments loosely connected by the most threadbare of plots, it's unfortunately one of those films some will praise merely because they don't want to be left out in the cold. Upstream Color contains striking microscopic imagery, cute pigs and alarmingly aggressive foley work. It's meticulous, methodical and educated - but also extreme, and extremely pretentious. The minimal dialogue is gnomic, often inaudible; the settings suddenly change without any apparent consistency of purpose. Upstream Color has the makings of a cult movie, though it's not a cult I feel inclined to join. The only thing more puzzling than Carruth's performance is that Upstream Color has garnered such acclaim to begin with.
"Hit The Exits" - [Panned Reaction] These are some of the worst films ever made. These films do everything wrong and do it worse than bad. Audiences should never see this film under any circumstances! (Films that are rated 0.5 or 1 stars).
