Review of Upstream Color (2013) by Mike C — 19 Nov 2014
If you think yourself of at least average intelligence yet find yourself looking for the meaning of a movie you just watched, something has gone wrong. Had never heard of this indie flick but it was on a top-see list so I thought I'd check it out.
It's definitely original and the actors do their job. I thought I was getting parts of it but, c'mon, throw me a bone.
The gist of it: you have basically the mysterious characters who are not even given real names (The Thief, The Sampler, etc). At some point, a conscious-stealing worm or something is introduced into a woman's bloodstream. More or less, this bug is an important part of the movie as one guy uses it to steal from the woman, another man uses it to feel through her. As I say, very original stuff, but not clear at all while you're watching it....kinda.
Seimetz is very sexy at times, sometimes vulnerable, sometimes crazy. But we know she's been through this so we can't call her crazy. Her boyfriend is actually the writer/director, and while I give him crops for an original movie, dude! Make it something we can understand at least a little. But, guy does have a nice voice and did okay as an actor.
So, I feel like I wasted my time. I like to get feeling from my movies (maybe I'm The Sampler), and if you don't know what the hell you're watching and you cannot relate to it, it's an empty experience. That's what this was for me.
