Review of Upstream Color (2013) by Matthew O — 03 May 2013
An utter masterpiece.
Shane Carruth, who brought us the mind-bending Primer almost a decade ago, is back with a film that is truly impossible to explain. Upstream Color seems more like a strange dream than a conventional movie, and on the surface really seems to have no purpose other than to simply be art. But beneath the surface, Upstream Color is a profound insight into co-dependence and attachment in relationships (both romantic and parasitic).
I will not go into plot details (not that it would ruin the movie; you don't know what's going on half of the time). Do not be fooled: this is a challenging watch. But at the same time, it is very rewarding. All I will say is that, if you pay attention and give it a chance, you will discover the plot is as intricate as the cinematography is beautiful.
It has a wonderful ending and keeps you guessing even after the credits roll. A thoroughly enjoying film, and easily the most original I've ever seen. 9.5/10.
