Review of Upside Down (2012) by Evan S — 06 Jul 2013
Jesus, what a waste of money!!! Seriously. There are so many things that went wrong in this movie to make it totally forgetable.
In first place, this movie is not romantic at all. It is depressing. There is no emotional attachment between the in love ones, and it is hard for you to feel attached to them. You are not going to comment at the end that they are like: Romeo and Juliette, or Jack and Rose. They are just in love because they shared moments when they were teens. Seriously? you are going to tell a romantic story and the base of that romance are some upside down moments they shared as teenagers?
Secondly: the atmosphere of this two parallel universes is depressing. Almost a metaphore of the North-South, Rich-Poor, New York-Mumbai, contrasts. That is just plain depressing. The similarities are evident and there is not effort to create some contrasts different in creative ways. There is lack of creativity or lazyness in the execution.
Third and worst: most of the movie takes place in a business enviroment, where there is not place to metaphores, there are people upside and down, and the upside people will always win. The CGI effects are just a poetic way to remember you that.
In general, a good idea, but poorly executed.
One star for the CGI effects and the art concept: Cafe Dos Mundos and some architectural details. With a lot of less budget, I recommend "Another Earth (2011)". More believable about parallel worlds and very well made.
