Review of Upside Down (2012) by Adam L — 24 Jul 2013
A fairly empty Romeo and Juliet tale. Sturgess is his usually likeable self and does a great job (weird voice over accent aside) but Kirsten Dunst is just an empty shell of a character with virtually no development whatsoever.
As such it is difficult to care about the pair as she simply just doesn't matter and is nowhere near interesting enough for it to matter if Adam (Jim Sturgess) character wins her or not. That said, there are some fairly unique visual effects and some clever trickery (think Brundlefly and you won't be far off) and it does have a distinct style.
Some of the ideas are genuinely clever but just as many fall flat and disappoint. Just about worth watching for the visuals and Sturgess (as well as a likeable, if underused, supporting role for a very slender looking Timothy Spall) but if you're looking for a meaningful narrative you'd be better of elsewhere.
