Review of Upside Down (2012) by Steve W — 08 Sep 2013
Upside Down's visuals outmatch its story. In an alternate reality where there are twin worlds opposite each other (that never rotate or need sunlight in other places), a Downworlder named Adam Kirk meets the love of his life, Eden. They grow up and keep in contact by climbing peaks, which allows them to spend time together. One day, border patrol separates them and Eden hits her head, and Adam's aunt is arrested for his breach.
Many years later, Adam sees Eden on television and wants to rekindle the romance. He gets a job at the cold and emotionless company known as Transworld, which is built in between worlds. As Adam develops a skin cream that defies gravity, he dates Eden again by weighing down his body with inverse matter from the Upworld, which burns when outside of its element for too long.
Herein lies the problem. The story has incredible visuals, breathtaking chase sequences, but not real climax. It winds down to Adam and Eden getting separated, and thing seems to be getting worse for out doomed lovers.
Then the script does a 180 flip and everything is alright. A happy ending is achieved, but it doesn't feel like they earned or deserved it. Its very sudden.
I can applaud the filmmaker for the unique vision of this sci fi romance spectacle, but the story and plot needed more polishing.
