Review of Upside Down (2012) by Elise B — 30 Mar 2014
I loved it. Jim Sturgess is adorable and whilst Kirsten Dunst isn't the perfect touchy feely match for his puppy dog persona, she's less blunt and edgy than many other characters she's played. I didn't feel the CGI outweighed the premise as the idea of opposing gravities was a fascinating exploration, indeed visually and physic-ally more considered than Elysium's good v evil opposers.
I also forgive the inconsistencies of gravitational pulls much as one forgives the insolvable conundrums of time travel. Our minds can bend very far, but ultimately still need to recoil before the real physics of our universe overwhelms. Brilliant effort in trying.
Less forgivable is high end CGI matched with 2d dialogue. He'll need a language coach for nuance next time and to put down the dictionary of insufferable cliche. 'But that's another story'. Probably not for a sequel...
