Review of Up the Yangtze (2007) by Derek C — 03 Dec 2008
Where another filmmaker would have inundated viewers with facts, numbers, and useless jargon to prove the point. Yung Chang focuses on the emotional response from being invested in a family and the sacrifice one must make to survive from a geographical phenomenon.
This is a telling account of the social structure of China, as well as its government in its treatment of both the situation and the people. Both entertaining and informative, the time-lapsed scene of the rising river at the end is haunting.
