Review of Up in the Air (2009) by Eva M — 18 Sep 2011
It was funny watching this straight after The Family Man. The films have the same basic, black-and-white dichotomy: either you have the mandatory marriage, large house, 2.4 children and labrador that seem to constitute the Hollywood Dream, or you are an antisocial, isolated, people-hating jerk.
There is no third option or tolerance of alternative lifestyles that might actually suit someone better... But anyway, this film was much better written and acted than The Family Man, at least, and with a bit more subtlety.
Clooney has his boyish charm, which counteracted the misantrophic character he was given. Vera Farmiga's character seemed the most sensible of them all. In retrospect, I really liked the scene where Alex is telling Natalie about what she'd look for in a partner, and Bingham sits there smirking enthusiastically, obviously thinking she's talking about him.
