Review of Up in the Air (2009) by Fabo O — 06 Oct 2013
I know I'm behind on this one, but I just saw it recently and wanted to share my thoguhts on it. First things first, I have to say that this movie was better than Juno--the director's previous film. As much as I do enjoy many parts of Juno--hell, I own a copy--it's a movie that hasn't really gotten better after repeat viewings, and the problems have become more obvious. I don't think that will be the case with this movie. While it's no masterpiece, I really enjoyed this one because it did everything better. Better acting, better direction, and most importantly, better story. Without giving anything away, anyone who's ever lost a job or had to put up with outside forces making one's job intolerable will most likely identify with this film. None of the characters are very likable, but they're all interesting and feel like real people in awkward situations.
To summarize, it's worth seeing and shows that Jason Reitman is growing as a director.
Post Script.
While this has nothing to do with the movie in and of itself, it probably would've scored slightly higher with me if I hadn't been informed about the shady goings-on during the production of this film and how even though certain scenes were shot on location in Kansas City, most of the potential local talent were given the shaft, and the producers of the movie used their time in KC as nothing more than a tax write-off.
