Review of Up in the Air (2009) by Gavin M — 06 Sep 2015
Definitely one of the best movies I have ever seen! I think a lot of people that are jobless right now in the United States can definitely relate to Jason Reitman's "Up in the Air". George Clooney is absolutely fantastic in the role of Ryan Bringham, who flies around the United States firing people for a living.
He does it so much that there are times even his character has forgot what it is actually like to hire someone. This is without a doubt a tailor made role for the actor and if you know of George Clooney's movie star life outside of the movies, then you know exactly what I mean when you see the film.
It's perfect for the man. The role garnered Clooney an academy award nomination for best actor in a motion picture, losing out to Daniel Day-Lewis for Paul Thomas Anderson's riveting oil drama "There Will Be Blood," and who among us can blame him for that? It's DDL, but let's stick to the basics here.
This is George Clooney's movie. It's also in my opinion one of his best movies right next to Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," which I still think is Clooney's best movie and best performance.
But "Up in the Air" is definitely a close second. But the reason why Clooney shines so much is also because the two supporting actresses that share the screen with him. The main attraction is Vera Farmiga, who everyone will recognize from Scorsese's "The Departed," definitely plays her hottest role on screen as Alex.
The woman that Clooney flirts with or I should say picks up at a bar somewhere during his travels around the United States firing people. She just so happens to be a traveler herself which makes it perfect for the two of them since they both are not really looking to get too close to each other.
But that all changes when Clooney starts seeing more of her as the film goes on, but I should warn you that Vera Farmiga's character has a secret that you must watch the movie in order to find out what I mean.
I'll tell you one thing, it will shock you just as much as it shocks Clooney when he pays a surprise visit to see her in her home in Chicago. It's literally one of those wtf moments literally.
Vera Farmiga lights up the screen every time she appears and you just want to ravage her she looks that hot. Then there is the very young and adorable Anna Kendrick who plays the new girl on the block who has come to Clooney's company after he is called back home from his boss played very well by Jason Bateman, and learns that the company is taking a new direction.
That direction is that in order to save money for the company, especially since employment in the United States is at an all time low in U.S. history, the company is deciding to take things in a new route when Kendrick's character shows that instead of traveling around the world to fire people, with new technology they will now fire people over the internet.
Saves time and money for the company so that way instead of going from place to place everyday traveling to fire people, they can go to one designated place. Anna Kendrick really shines in this movie as she really is the scene stealer in this movie and that is why Clooney also is so amazing in the role because she gives him something to feed on to deliver better in his performance.
Jason Reitman has definitely created something for the ages hopefully as this is a movie that came out exactly the right time when it needed to come out. It also shows after his huge success with "Juno" that Jason Reitman is here to stay and I look forward to many of his movies for years to come.
