Review of Up (2009) by Alexander B — 19 Dec 2013
Unless you are THAT person, the one who gets too nitpicky with a movie and lets trivial tidbits ruin the entire experience, it is impossible not to like "Up". It can only be despised if you hate good movies (or chubby Asian boy scouts). As a matter of fact, it may as well be the best Pixar creation yet. It is not the typical child-friendly adventure movie though, as it is not an overly fantastical showing, but rather a creative reality check-up with hints of magic. Maintaining a beautiful balance between stark realism, energetic fantasy, classical music, and Pixar's trademark graphics, "Up" belongs in the upper echelons of aesthetically-pleasing movies.
The most attention-grabbing scene lasts only five minutes, but it is what makes this movie special. Deviating from the happy-go-lucky model of many children's movies, these five minutes are originality in its purest form. A silent, yet potent, montage depicts the protagonist's experience with the adventure of love and life, spanning from his light-hearted youth to his somber and elderly years. It would be no surprise for you to begin the montage filled with optimistic glee and finish it in genuine tears. This work of art epitomizes the beauty of the film. There is no need to have dialogue for something that only the eyes and hearts of viewers should embrace. It is something like this that has you realizing that movies like "Up" will be nothing short of spectacular.
I am surprised by the manner in which Pixar presents of the story's foundation, because it is uncharacteristically serious and poignant, especially for the average young viewer. Nonetheless, "Up" sparks a constant fluctuation of emotions, no matter how old you are. From hope and despair to fear and wonder, every moment evokes a different emotion that seamlessly diffuses into and intertwines with the nuances of the film. Like how the balloons lift the house to a happier place, "Up" lifts the spirits, hearts, and imaginations for all who watch in awe of movie mastery.
