Review of Untraceable (2008) by Laurent P — 27 Apr 2009
I was totally under the impression I'd already posted a review for this film back in the day when it came out in theaters but I guess not.
The very underrated Director of "Fallen" and "Primal Fear", Gregory Hoblit, presents "the story of a technology-savvy serial killer who displays his graphic murders on his own website". Diane Lane stars as Jennifer Marsh, an FBI cyber crimes Agent caught up in trying to capture the perp behind the "untraceable" website. Not bad, eh?
Critical observation to every detail and accurate portrayal on the technical side of the Portland Police bureau and FBI make for a tenable story. At times graphic, the writers quietly instill society's gratuitous worshiping of another man's suffering. Hundreds at a time, people log in to assist in murder. Sad.
I liked its stylistic visuals, tones and soundtrack. One scene that comes to mind is the bridge scene near the end where Lane's character stands alone. I can still feel the fear... hear the raindrops on the hood of her silver SUV.
All in all, Portland sets the stage for a great cat-and-mouse game that, at the very least, is entertaining and distracting. Any thoughts?
