Review of Until Death (2007) by Adam R — 29 May 2010
For your consideration: Jean-Claude Van Damme(?) Strange as it seems, Van Damme deserves a lot of recognition for his role in this otherwise unassuming police action-thriller.
Van Damme plays Stowe, a narc spiraling into oblivion. His marriage is falling apart, he's shooting up heroin, he's ratting out his peers for trivial offenses, and he's caused the death of at least two undercover officers. Though his nemesis is ostensibly cop-turned-criminal Gabriel Callahan (Stephen Rea, oddly cast and miscast at the same time), Stowe is his own worst enemy.
"Until Death" was released direct-to-DVD. Given that it reinflated interest in Van Damme's career (and, I think, would have made a better fore-title for last year's "Port of Call New Orleans"), this movie is aching to be discovered.
