I think there is one more under layer tk this movie and it's not only about who's human in the end. I think that Josef really was a true loyal American (remember he started his first video recording attempt introducing himself as his US name) and his actions and sacrifice of his wife and childen were to make people realize how real the threat was.

To make people cautious and to wake them up to fight for their freedom and for their beliefs and their country. I think he was a fake Muslim and he lied about everything just to cover his real purpose which was to make people mad and change the existing ways.

And he really did win how H said.
