Review of Unsane (2018) by Kevin S — 18 Jun 2018
An enjoyable film, nothing spectacular and though it claims to be psychological horror, I viewed that claim as misleading. There is nothing psychological about it because everything is as it seems. I thought the direction was poor, using the "teddy bear cam" vantage at times was insufficient, along with a lack of visual creativity.
I thought the focus on what is wrong with mental healthcare today was very relevant and was where this film thrived. Claire Foy also played her role well, along with all other actors in general. the Matt Damon appearance was an added bonus.
Poor directing was the main shortcoming for me, along with a lack of originality within the story development. Scratch the writers and director, and this film truly had unlimited potential, it's a shame the idea and performances of the cast were wasted with generic writing and poor direction.
