Review of Unrest (2006) by Geoff J — 10 Nov 2009
Last year, I got the chance to work with a bunch of medical students, and they enjoyed talking about their "gross anatomy" class, where they had the horrifying experience of dissecting cadavers.
This film takes this premise and runs with it. Granted, I will confess that the plot is silly at times; after all, the main device is that one of the cadavers is possessed by the spirit of an Aztec goddess.
On the other hand, this classic horror movie trope turns out to be a useful way to explore the life of young medical students; in addition, the movie also provides some smart commentary on how we treat the dead once they are reduced to scientific objects.
Most importantly, this movie is goddamn scary; it has some pretty intense moments, and the musical score only adds to the suspense. As a whole, the movie is impressive, although the acting is sometimes pretty horrible.
