Review of Unlocked (2017) by Kat K — 22 Sep 2017
Unlocked is a spy thriller with a typical twisty-turny plot, a plethora of betrayals and a nonsensical endgame for the bad guys. It has some huge names in the cast, including the likes of John Malkovich and Michael Douglas, but nobody outside of Noomi Rapace's Alice is fleshed out in the slightest.
The baddies are your typical 'Lets destroy the world for our own ends' kind of people, and they plan the concoct is ultimately pointless and obviously foiled. It's nothing that hasn't been seen before, and the movie feels like it's spending more effort trying to conjure up a series of elaborate and shocking back stabbings than telling a coherent yet complex story.
Despite all this, it's still a largely enjoyable watch, especially thanks to Rapace's committed and likable performance. It steams along at a breeze pace and never gets too heavy or maudlin to sully its value as, let's face it, a silly popcorn flick.
An easy one to watch, though certainly not one to admire, Unlocked treads entirely on the road most walked, but still has plenty of fun along the way.
