Review of Unleashed (2005) by Stephen K — 26 May 2008
A real gem of a film and something very different to what you'd expect from Jet Li.
At first I was worried I was about to sit through another generic British crime movie focusing around a group of cockney gangstas, but thankfully as soon as Danny escapes, a tender little human story is opened up, one that compliments the gangster side of things very nicely. It all builds to a fairly philosophical ending that whilst not subtle in the slightest, doesn't ram itself down your throat.
Performances are all round fantastic, especially Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins and Jet Li. It's shot very nicely too. Plus obviously, there's some fantastic action sequences, but that goes without saying in a Jet Li movie. All I can really criticize is the editing which is part of what made me wary at the start. It looked like the film was going down the Guy Ritchie (crap) route at one point.
Overall, a great little lesser known movie. Well worth a watch.
Personal enjoyment: 7/10.
Actual quality as a film: 8/10.
